Arepas from Encanto: the Madrigal Family's Colombian Breakfast
In Encanto, arepas de choclo (with cheese) are made by Julieta — her magical gift turns food into a healing remedy. Arepas in Colombia are eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner — they are the foundation of the national cuisine.
History and origin
Arepas — flat corn cakes — have existed in South America for thousands of years. In Colombia they are made from white or yellow corn, while in Venezuela from pre-cooked corn. Every region has its own version.
Key ingredients
Arepas de choclo: cornmeal (masarepa), fresh corn on the cob (grated), egg, sugar, butter and grated cheese (mozzarella or halloumi). The cakes are cooked on a dry griddle or grill.
How to cook at home
Arepa dough should be firm but not crumbly — add water gradually. Cook the cakes for 4–5 minutes on each side without oil over moderate heat. Add cheese inside or on top while still hot.
