Link's Hearty Meat Skewers (Zelda)
Juicy chunks of marinated meat on skewers, seared to a golden crust — like the dish Link grills over a campfire. Simple, bold and made for the trail.

In The Legend of Zelda games, cooking is its own mechanic: Link gathers meat, vegetables and seasonings and grills dishes right at a campfire to restore his strength before an adventure. Meat skewers are one of Hyrule's most recognizable treats. We recreate them at home: marinate the meat in a simple but fragrant sauce and sear it on skewers to a juicy golden crust. Perfect on a pan, grill or barbecue.
🧺 Ingredients
🍽 4 servings👩🍳 Method
- 1
Marinade
Mix the soy sauce, oil, honey, paprika, minced garlic, salt and pepper. Grate or finely chop the onion and add it to the marinade.
- 2
Meat
Cut the meat into 3 cm cubes, pour over the marinade and toss. Chill for at least 1 hour, ideally 2-3.
- 3
Skewer
Soak the wooden skewers in water for 20 minutes so they don't burn. Thread the meat on snugly but not packed tight, so it cooks evenly.
- 4
Sear
Heat a grill pan, grill or barbecue until very hot. Sear the skewers on all sides for 8-12 minutes, turning regularly, until golden and crusty.
- 5
Glaze
At the end, brush the meat with leftover marinade or a spoon of honey-soy mix and sear one more minute — a glossy, appetizing glaze forms.
- 6
Serve
Let the meat rest a couple of minutes to keep the juices in. Serve with herbs, roasted vegetables or rice — hearty, like after a long trek across Hyrule.
💡 Tips
- 💡
Soak wooden skewers in water for 20 minutes — otherwise they char over high heat.
- 💡
Don't pack the pieces too tightly: heat needs to flow between them, or the meat steams instead of searing.
🔄 Swaps & variations
- 🔄
Alternate the meat with chunks of bell pepper, onion and zucchini for a hearty veg-loaded version.

❓ Frequently asked questions
How are meat skewers connected to The Legend of Zelda?
In the games, cooking is its own mechanic: Link grills gathered meat at a campfire to restore health. Meat skewers are one of Hyrule's most recognizable dishes.
What meat is best for the skewers?
Beef tenderloin or chuck, pork neck or chicken thigh all work. The key is not to use too lean a cut, so the meat stays juicy.
Can I cook these without a barbecue?
Yes, they turn out great on a grill pan or under the oven broiler. The crust is a touch less smoky, but the flavor stays rich.
