Hayao Miyazaki's film Ponyo has a scene fans adore: Lisa pours boiling water over instant noodles, covers the bowl, and a couple of minutes later reveals a ramen topped with bright slices of ham and halved eggs. Ponyo is overjoyed. This is a home version of that very dish: good noodles, a rich broth, ham and an egg — a cozy bowl in just minutes, just like on screen.

Cut the ham into large slices about 1 cm thick — just like the ones in the film.

💡 Tips

  • 💡

Warm the bowls with boiling water before serving — the ramen stays hot longer.

  • 💡

Do not overcook the noodles: pull them a touch early, they finish in the hot broth.

🔄 Swaps & variations

  • 🔄

Add corn and a pat of butter for a heartier, miso-ramen-style bowl.

  • 🔄

For heat, stir in a spoon of spicy rayu oil or chili paste.
