Lembas Elven Bread from The Lord of the Rings
The nourishing elven waybread: tender buttery cakes with honey and vanilla. A single bite fills you for a long while — just like on the Fellowship's journey.

Lembas is the legendary elven waybread from The Lord of the Rings. The elves of Lothlorien give it to the Fellowship for the road: they say a single small piece is enough to sustain a grown traveler for a whole day. In the books and films lembas is wrapped in mallorn leaves and treasured like a jewel. The real-world "lembas" is usually made as soft buttery scone-cakes with honey — nourishing, fragrant and easy to carry. We make exactly that homemade version.
🧺 Ingredients
🍽 9 servings👩🍳 Method
- 1
Dry mix
Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and rub it into crumbs with your fingertips.
- 2
Wet mix
Separately whisk the milk, egg, honey, vanilla and lemon zest. Pour into the dry mix and quickly bring together a soft, slightly sticky dough — don't overwork it.
- 3
Shape
Roll the dough to a 2 cm thick sheet and cut it into 6-7 cm squares — the recognizable lembas shape.
- 4
Mark
With the back of a knife, score shallow crisscross diagonal lines on each square — the signature elven pattern.
- 5
Bake
Brush the tops with milk and bake at 190 °C for 15-18 minutes, until the cakes are golden and risen.
- 6
Serve
Cool on a rack. Lembas is delicious warm and keeps for a couple of days — wrap it in parchment or, like the elves, in a large leaf.
💡 Tips
- 💡
Work the dough quickly with cold butter — that keeps the cakes fluffy and tender.
- 💡
Don't roll the dough too thin: lembas should be tall and soft inside.
🔄 Swaps & variations
- 🔄
Fold a handful of raisins or candied peel into the dough for a heartier "trail" version.
