Wednesday Addams from the Netflix series loves everything dark and unconventional. A cake in her style — black sponge with activated charcoal colouring, purple cream and gloomy decoration of skulls and roses — is perfect for Halloween.

History and origin

The character of Wednesday Addams was created by Charles Addams for The New Yorker cartoons in 1938. The Netflix series (2022) with Jenna Ortega gave the character new life and triggered a wave of gothic aesthetics in pop culture.

Key ingredients

Black cake: chocolate sponge plus 1–2 tsp of food-grade activated charcoal. Cream: buttercream with purple and black food colouring. Decoration: marzipan skulls, black cream roses, white icing spider's web.

How to cook at home

Activated charcoal gives baked goods a dark grey or black colour without affecting taste. Do not add more than 2 tsp per 200g of flour — otherwise the sponge tastes bitter. Add black gel colouring to the cream gradually.

This recipe will transport you to the atmosphere of your favourite film or series right at your dining table.
