Sanji's Cooking from One Piece: the Art of Sea Kitchen
Sanji — the cook of the Thousand Sunny pirate crew — is one of the most famous culinary characters in anime. His motto 'Never let anyone die of hunger' turned cooking into a philosophy.
History and origin
Sanji cooked in the Baratie restaurant under chef Zeff from childhood. His style is classical French cuisine adapted for sea travel. Oda Eiichiro's anime first aired in 1997 and continues to this day.
Key ingredients
Sanji's iconic dish is French onion soup: beef broth, caramelised onion, a crouton and melted Gruyère. For maritime romance, add seafood or use a fish-based broth.
How to cook at home
Caramelising the onion is the key to great onion soup: cook on medium heat for 40–60 minutes, stirring constantly, until deep golden. Do not rush — only long, slow cooking gives the right sweetness.
Try this recipe at home — it's much easier than it looks and will make you feel part of your favourite universe.
