Medieval Feast from Game of Thrones: a Westeros-Style Banquet
Banquets in Game of Thrones are scenes of politics, intrigue and poison. But remove the poisoned wine and conspiracies and a Westerosi feast is authentic medieval cooking: roast boar, bird pies, grain pottage and mead.
History and origin
The show's creators worked with historical culinary experts, and the official book A Feast of Ice and Fire (2012) contains authentic adaptations of Westerosi dishes based on medieval sources, including recipes from 14th and 15th-century manuscripts.
Key ingredients
A GoT medieval feast: roast suckling pig with apple, chicken and mushroom pie under a soured cream pastry crust, buckwheat porridge with pork, home-brewed beer or mead and dark rye bread.
How to cook at home
For a medieval-style chicken pie, make a 'coffyn' (historically a tall shortcrust shell used as a container, not eaten itself). Filling: chicken, mushrooms, parsley, cream and egg yolks.
This recipe will transport you to the atmosphere of your favourite film or series right at your dining table.
