Lembas from Lord of the Rings: Elvish Waybread at Home
Lembas is the elvish waybread from The Lord of the Rings, so nourishing that a single bite sustains you for a whole day. In reality fans have created dozens of recipes interpreting the 'white leaf, sweet as honey'.
History and origin
Lembas is first mentioned by Tolkien in The Silmarillion: the Elves of Valinor learned to make this bread for long journeys. In The Lord of the Rings, Galadriel gives lembas to the Fellowship as provisions on the road to Mordor.
Key ingredients
Home lembas by fan recipe: almond flour, honey, coconut oil, vanilla and a little matcha powder (for a greenish tint). Shape the dough into squares, wrap in a leaf (or baking paper) and bake at 175°C for 10 minutes.
How to cook at home
Lembas is traditionally presented wrapped in a large leaf: use a maple or vine leaf, or an imitation from green baking paper. Tie with twine — for the genuine effect of an elven gift.
This recipe will transport you to the atmosphere of your favourite film or series right at your dining table.
